Inspired By… Jess Priest

Last week, illustrator and painter Jess Priest came into the Jacques Vert studio to do a print painting techniques masterclass with the designers. We caught up for lunch with Jess after the class to find out what inspires her…

The Jacques Vert design team loved their flower painting workshop! Have you always enjoyed painting flowers?

I’ve always loved painting and drawing. My Mum was a graphic designer, so I had a very creative upbringing. I went to Winchester School of Art and graduated in Fashion Print in 2000. The best piece of advice I had there from a visiting lecturer was, that if you could paint a flower, then you would be able to find a job in textile design. She wasn’t wrong and soon after graduating I found myself working for a top print design studio in London where I painted flowers all day long. Working in a textile studio is very fast paced, and under that pressure you soon find your own handwriting and develop techniques which work. I’ve always been in work off the back of a good old floral design!

How did you become a painting teacher?

The power of social media! I’d been freelancing from my home studio since having my daughters and been thankful that I could be at home with them. I joined Instagram a couple of years ago and started to put up pictures of my floral paintings and design work. I kept getting asked if I taught classes or would do some private painting tuition, so started to do a few workshops in fashion and textile studios. My classes have really taken off and through word of mouth and social media I’ve been able to keep teaching. I also have workshops in Marlow, Buckinghamshire which is where I’m based. These are open to everyone and take place about eight times a year. I’m really happy that Instagram has opened up a new direction for me, I’ve met loads of lovely people through teaching and its great to be passing on techniques and skills to people who want to expand on their skill set or maybe haven’t picked up a paint brush in a while.

What inspires your painting?

For me its about being very hands on with the mediums which I use. I don’t think theres anything like having a proper paintbrush in your hand and seeing a flower come alive on that white piece of paper. I love ink which is great for creating layers in my work, It really lends itself to capturing the feeling of delicate petals and foliage. I’m always trying different mediums and trying out new techniques to keep my work looking fresh. I will never get tired of painting a flower though, I’m happiest when choosing what to paint in the florists.

You also do printed textile design, who have you designed prints for?

Its been a varied customer base. I’ve had prints in a lot of High street stores such as M&S, Debenhams and Next as well as Anthropologie, Toast and Vera Wang.

How would you describe your day to day style?

I love a bit of sports luxe! There are so many gorgeous prints out there in sportswear. I like to keep things simple and pair a few key pieces with buys from the high street each season.

Jacques Vert New Season Prints

This Spring/Summer 2017 season, our amazing design team have been hard at work painting and designing the beautiful new season prints showcased in the collections.

Most of Jacques Vert’s new season prints are designed and painted in-house, in our London design studio. The team research and travel for inspiration, then come up with a series of design concepts. Inspiration can be gathered from anywhere – beautiful places and landscapes, architecture and interiors, old buildings. Nature is a favourite, with rivers and the sea inspiring many colours, and florals and botanicals inspiring many prints. These inspirations are then hand painted or digitally worked into prints, and the favourites are produced.

From there the prints can be altered to suit different colour palettes or scaled to suit different trend pieces. Particular sections of the prints can be focused upon or made to stand out, depending on the garment and what will suit the style of the product.

These new season prints are mainly based on beautiful florals and natural botanicals. The prints showcased in the Sahara collection use blurred floral techniques that have been created digitally. These were inspired by dreamy and hazy mirage style scenes from the Sahara desert.

Be inspired by the stunning new season prints from Jacques Vert.

We caught up with Bloom & Wild’s founder Sara to find out more about this wonderful company and how a busy modern woman stays stylish every day…

Sara

How did the idea for Bloom & Wild come about?

We wanted to make sending and receiving flowers a joy again, so we looked at ways to improve delivery, freshness and design from ordering online to the packaging to the bouquets themselves. The result is a curated collection of flowers, seamless ordering experience from our site and apps and check-out that takes less than 30 seconds (yes, it’s true!). Our flowers are cut to order and packed ‘in-bud’ which is not traditional, but it allows the customer to enjoy the full life of their flowers.

We found that people were always worried about flower delivery because you need to notify the person of ‘something arriving’ or perhaps the blooms would arrive and not look like the website. Our letterbox flowers mean that you can send flowers through the post and they come carefully hand-packed with little nets around each bloom to protect them. We also pop in handy arrangement instructions with ideas on how to style the blooms. Its a creative gift, allowing the recipient to play the florist.

Where do you source your flowers from?

Our blooms come direct from our grower network – we work with farmers to source our blooms based on the season. We forecast really carefully so that we only get what we need from our growers and no more, it means that we waste less, which is brilliant.

What are your favourite winter flowers?

We’re really loving wintry foliage right now, skimmia in our letterbox wreath, rosemary

Any tips for creating beautiful flower displays at home this Christmas?

I often find that people are really worried about how capable they are when it comes to arranging flowers – we like to experiment a lot with styles and designs from opulent to minimal. For Christmas, think about whether you want to use flowers or foliage as an accent or a hero centrepiece. For small touches, add rosemary to folded napkins and cutlery place settings with twine or fill clear baubles with twigs, berries and evergreen.

How would you describe your day to day style?

My day to day style is about form and function, I’m running from meetings to flower fridges, so layers are a must. Black, white and grey are staple colours, but I love a little burst of metallics or colour from time to time. Now that the days are getting colder, a bit of fun in my wardrobe is a must! In the office, we’re loving cool pins and hair clips too, we’ve got such a creative bunch here with awesome style.

What are your three favourite pieces from the Dash AW16 collection?

Love these three – cosy and cute!
